Borrowed from Italian scoglio[1], from Vulgar Latin *scoclus (possibly through a Gallo-Italic intermediate), from Latin scopulus, from Ancient Greek σκόπελος (skópelos, lookout place: hence peak, headland, promontory). Compare Catalan escull.
