Etymology
From Old French chanvre, chenvre, inherited from Late Latin canava, canapus, altered form of the Classical Latin cannabis, a borrowing from Ancient Greek κάνναβις (kánnabis). Doublet of cannabis, which was a later borrowing from Latin.
