Etymology 2
From Old French chanfrain. The first part of the word is of uncertain origin. It may be composed of the Latin elements caput (French chef) and Latin frenum (French frein), with an unexplained nasalization (possibly influenced phonetically by the above, unrelated word in Etymology 1). Alternatively the first element may be derived from Old French champ, chanp, from Latin campus (“field”).
