Etymology

From icelui, from ici (here) + lui (him) or from Vulgar Latin *ecce illui, (genitive-)dative masculine singular of *ecce ille (influenced by Latin cui 'to whom'; cf. French lui), from Latin ecce + ille. Compare Italian colui, cf. also Romanian acelui.
