From Proto-Italic *katīnos, probably ultimately a substrate loanword or from Proto-Indo-European *ket-. Compare Serbo-Croatian kòtac (cattle-shed, weir), Old English heaðor (enclosure, jail), Ancient Greek κοτύλη (kotúlē, a cup, a pint), Albanian thes (bag, sack).
