From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ- (“sharp, pointed”). Synchronically equivalent to aceō + -iēs. Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀκίς (akís, “point, pointed object”), ἀκή (akḗ, “point”) and Proto-Germanic *agjō (whence English edge).
