Etymology
From Latin diēs caniculārēs (“puppy days”), from Canīcula (“the Puppy”),[1] a calque of the Ancient Greek Κῠ́ων (Kúōn, “the Dog”) in reference to Sirius, which appears in Homeric Greek as "Orion's dog".[2]
