Etymology 1

From Venetian or Latin, from Ancient Greek Χάνδαξ (Khándax) or Χάνδακας (Khándakas), from Arabic رَبْض الخَنْدَق (rabḍ al-ḵandaq), name of the Cretan city of Heraklion under the Emirate of Crete.
