From Middle Irish cotlaid (compare Irish codail, Manx caddil), from Old Irish ·cotli, prototonic of con·tuili, from *kom-tulī-, from Proto-Celtic *toleyo-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tel- (“be still”).
