From Middle High German wespe, from Old High German wefsa, wafsa, from Proto-Germanic *wapsō (“wasp”). Cognate with German Wespe, Dutch wesp, English wasp; also Italian vespa. See Wespe for more on the -ps- to -sp- metathesis.
