Etymology

First attested as bonscoten in 1294. Compound of an unclear first element and the dative plural form of Middle Dutch schoet (“piece of land which juts upwards”). The first element has been linked to Proto-Germanic *bunjô (“elevated place, height”) and Old English bune (“reed”).
