bumper bar (plural bumper bars)

1. A metal bar or set of bars that are installed to protect the front or back of a vehicle.
   • 1920, Oildom - Volume 11, Issues 2-11, page 6:

     By grasping the bumper bar at the center a slight backward pull accompanied by a lifting motion enables the driver to swing the bumper bar to a position where it will not in any way interfere with the filing of the buckets.

   • 1937, Ray Forest Kuns, Trailer Engineering, page 48:

     In order to attach the main iron to the bumper bar, an angle bar is run over the main iron and back of the bumper bar.

   • 1951, Autobody and the Reconditioned Car - Volume 30, page 57:

     It is used to stiffen the assembly carrying the bumper bar, to carry the front edge of a tread plate if one is used for a rear step, and to hold the rear ends of hangers, indicated as H, if a spare tire carrier rack or compartment is added.
