From Vulgar Latin *brūcāria or Medieval Latin brūgāria (“heath”), a derivative of Late Latin *brūcus (“heather”), from Gaulish *brūcos, from Proto-Celtic *wroikos. Equivalent to bruc + -era.
Cognate to Occitan bruguièra, French bruyère, Norman brüethe, Lombard brughera, and Italian brughiera.
