Borrowed from Lombard brughera or Occitan bruguièra, from Vulgar Latin *brūcāria or Medieval Latin brūgāria (“heath”), a derivative of Late Latin *brūcus (“heather”), of Gaulish origin, from Proto-Celtic *wroikos. By surface analysis, brugo + -iera.
Also cognate to Catalan bruguera, French bruyère and Norman brüethe.
