Etymology

  • (Gelderland) First attested as brunchorst in 1128-1139. Compound of brunk (an ablauted form of brink (edge, village common)) and horst (overgrown hillock). Despite having only 90 inhabitants, Bronkhorst received city rights in 1482 and is therefore classed as a city.
  • (Noord-Brabant) Attested as weilanden genaamd Bronkhorst in 1848. Potentially derived from Bronkhorst (a surname).
