闷 [mēn] 动

1. ■ （使不透气） cover tightly:

把火闷灭 cover [bank] fire with ashes;

把沏好的茶再闷一会儿。 Let the tea stand a while to draw flavour.

2. ■ （不说话） be tonguetied; stop speaking:

会上大家都闷住了。 Everybody is tonguetied at the meeting.

你好像有什么事闷在心里。 You seem to brood over things.

3. ■ （呆在屋里， 不去外面） shut oneself or sb. indoors:

把孩子闷在家里 shut one's child indoors

闷得难受 suffocating ;

这里真闷。 The air here is terribly close.

2. ■ [方] （声音不响亮） muffled; dull in sound:

说话声音很闷 speak in a muffled voice
