Etymology
First attested as Botsholemeer in 1575. Compound of an unclear first element and hol (“low-lying swampland”). The first element may be comparable to dialectal bodse (“swamp”) or bod (“clump of reeds standing at the edge of a piece of land”). Originally a hydronym.
