Etymology
From Occitan botarga or Italian bottarga (“a type of large sausage, wide breeches”), from Arabic بطارخ (buṭariḫ), from Coptic ⲟⲩⲧⲁⲣⲁⲭⲟⲛ (outarakhon), from Byzantine Byzantine Greek ᾠοτάριχον (ōiotárikhon) = ᾠόν (ōión, “egg”) + τάριχον (tárikhon, “pickled fish”) (compare αβγοτάραχο (avgotáracho)). Related to Italian bottarga, French boutargue.
