赖 [lài] 动

1. ■ （依靠） rely on; depend on:

仰赖 depend on sb. or sth. for support;

有赖于你的帮助 rely upon you for help;

赖以生存的条件 conditions on which persons or things rely [depend] for existence

2. ■ （逗留不肯离去） hang on in a place; drag out one's stay in a place:

赖在城市不走 hang on in a city and refuse to clear out;

不容许侵略者赖在别国的领土上。 The aggressors must not be allowed to hold on to the territories of other countries.

他们不会让他们再在那里赖下去。 They won't allow them to hang on there any longer.

3. ■ （抵赖; 不认错; 不承担责任） deny one's error or responsibility; go back on one's word; disavow:

赖婚 repudiate a marriage contract;

赖不掉 cannot be denied [repudiated]

4. ■ （硬说别人有错; 诬赖） lay the blame on others; falsely incriminate [accuse]:

赖他偷东西 falsely accuse him of being a thief;

自己做错了， 不能赖别人。 You should not blame others for what is your own fault.

这事不赖他。 He's not to blame for that.
