Etymology
The first meaning from Proto-Slavic *blěskъ; according to Șăineanu, this meaning emerged because the soul of animals came to be compared to the flash of a lightning bolt or a spark, a glitter. The second meaning could indeed originate from the same stem, but could also be from an interjection of onomatopoeic origin. Cf. to fleșcăi, fleașc.
