Unknown; presumably from Illyrian, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleyd- (“pale”), perhaps whence Albanian blehurë (“pale”), Proto-Slavic *blědъ (“pale”), Proto-West Germanic *blait (“pale, discolored”).[1]
