From Proto-Turkic *ạ̄č (“hungry, hunger”). The verb is from homophonous Proto-Turkic *ạ̄č- (“to hunger”). Cognate with Karakhanid ااجْماقْ (āčmaq, “to hunger”), Bashkir ас (as, “hungry”), Turkish aç (“hungry”), Yakut аас (aas, “hungry”).
