Etymology

According to Bailey from the Proto-Iranian preverb *ā- + *ĵánati (“be born”), which is from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬁𐬯𐬥𐬀‎ (āsna, “noble”), Khotanese [script needed] (āysña-, “well-born, noble”), first component of Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾznʾwl /āznāwar/), as well as Old Armenian ազն (azn), Georgian აზნი (azni), აზნაური (aznauri), Iranian loanwords.
