From Middle Iranian *ni-pista, from *pays- (“to write”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *payĉ-, from Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ-. Cognate with Old Persian [script needed] (nipišta), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬉𐬯 (paēs), and Sanskrit पेश् (peś, “to adorn”).
