而且 [ér qiě] 连

1. ■ （表示进一层） not only ... but (also); and that:

这位同志会讲英语，而且讲得很好。 This comrade speaks English, and that very well.

空气不仅占据空间，而且它还具有重量。 Air not only occupies space but it also has weight.

2. ■ （表示平列） and:

这屋子很宽敞，而且光线充足。 The room is spacious and bright.

假日太少，而且间隔很长。 Holidays are few and far between.
