-𐌸𐌿𐍃
Gothic
Alternative forms
- -𐍄𐌿𐍃 (-tus), -𐌳𐌿𐍃 (-dus)
Etymology
From Proto-Germanic *-þuz. The related suffix *-ōþuz is marginally attested in Gothic; only 𐌼𐌰𐌽𐌽𐌹𐍃𐌺𐍉𐌳𐌿𐍃 (manniskōdus) appears to match completely, although 𐌲𐌰𐌱𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌾𐍉𐌸𐌿𐍃 (gabaurjōþus), 𐌰𐌿𐌷𐌾𐍉𐌳𐌿𐍃 (auhjōdus), 𐌲𐌰𐌿𐌽𐍉𐌸𐌿𐍃 (gaunōþus) and 𐍅𐍂𐌰𐍄𐍉𐌳𐌿𐍃 (wratōdus) also could be interpreted as containing that suffix instead of bare -þus.
This suffix is sometimes said to not have been productive in Gothic anymore, meaning that any word in which it is found would have to be an inherited term from Proto-Germanic.
Suffix
-𐌸𐌿𐍃 • (-þus)
- Forms masculine nouns from verbs, in some cases from the zero-grade form of the base.
