Etymology
Probably from Proto-Germanic *hajaz ~ *hajizaz n along with Old High German hei (“heat”),[1] ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *key- (“hot”), the hypothetical root of both *key-t- (“shining, bright”) (as in Proto-Germanic *haidraz (“clear, bright”), Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌳𐌿𐍃 (haidus, “manner”)) and *key-d- (as in *haitaz (“hot”), 𐌷𐌴𐌹𐍄𐍉 (heitō, “fever”)).[2]
