Sino-Korean word from 憲兵, from 憲 (“constitution”) + 兵 (“soldier”), an orthographic borrowing from Japanese 憲兵(けんぺい) (kenpei).

Usage notes

In South Korea, the military police of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces was changed to 군사경찰 (軍事警察, gunsagyeongchal) due to negative connotations to the kempetai under Japanese occupation.[1]
