Etymology 1
Reduplication of 팽 (paeng). The third sense is figurative, from an image of the head spinning about while thinking.
Ideophone
팽팽 • (paengpaeng)
- round and round; while repeatedly circling a relatively small area
- nauseatingly
- (by extension, of thinking) intelligently
Usage notes
팽팽 (paengpaeng) is the yang vowel, or bright vowel, form of 핑핑 (pingping).
In contemporary Korean, the yang vowels refer to /a/, /ɛ/, and /o/. In Korean ideophones and sensory words, forms with these vowels have a connotation of brightness, smallness, clearness, sharpness, youth, or positiveness.
팽팽 (paengpaeng) is the aspirated consonant form of neutral 뱅뱅 (baengbaeng) and intensive 뺑뺑 (ppaengppaeng).
In certain Korean ideophones and sensory words, forms with aspirated consonants are para-intensive; they emphasize the degree to which the description is true to an extreme extent beyond that enabled by the intensive form alone.
