单词 팓다
释义

팓다

Korean

Etymology

Of native Korean origin. While apparently unattested in Middle Korean, the Standard Korean verb 파닥이다 (padagida, “to flap, to flutter”) and ideophones 파닥 (padak, “flappingly, flutteringly”) and 파드닥 (padeudak, “id.”) are transparently derived forms. The Yukjin word is thus believed to preserve an unattested Middle Korean verb, which would be an irregularly pitched *ᄑᆞᆮ〮다〮 (*phóttá) assuming that the Yukjin high pitch is faithful to the original pitch.

Verb

팓다 (patda) (infinitive 팓아, sequential 팓으니)

  1. (Yukjin, of a bird) to lightly flutter its wings
    Synonym: 파닥이다 (padagida, Standard Korean)

Usage notes

팓다 (patda) is the yang vowel, or bright vowel, form of 푿다 (putda) and 펃다 (peotda).

In contemporary Korean, the yang vowels refer to /a/, /ɛ/, and /o/. In Korean ideophones and sensory words, forms with these vowels have a connotation of brightness, smallness, clearness, sharpness, youth, or positiveness.
