Etymology
떡 (tteok, “rice cake”) + 밥 (bap, “steamed rice”). Traditional Korean paste bait was made by rolling steamed rice into small balls the size of rice cakes, hence the name. The Internet slang sense is from the notion of "fishing" for replies or discussion.
