Etymology
First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄯᅡᇂ〮 (Yale: stáh), from pre-Middle Korean *s(ò)ták. The modern form, first attested in the seventeenth century, is not directly descended from Seoul Middle Korean but from an unattested dialectal form in which the final velar was nasalized to *s(ò)táng. The direct descendant of the Middle Korean is 따 (tta, “earth; land”), which is now archaic.
