Etymology
Of native Korean origin. From Early Modern Korean, Middle Korean 대ᄧᅩᆨ (taypcwok), equivalent to 대 (dae), short for 대나무 (daenamu, “bamboo”) + 쪽 (jjok), from 쪼개다 (jjogaeda, “to split”).
