Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 다〯ᄒᆞ다〮 (Yale: tǎ-hòtá).

(da, all) + 하다 (-hada, to do, light verb deriving active verbs).

  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescriptive in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
