First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 짗〮 (Yale: cích).
The modern Standard Seoul form is a result of hypercorrection by Seoul speakers to avoid the /ki/ > /t͡ɕi/ palatalization in southern dialects. The hypercorrected form is first attested in the 19th century as Early Modern Korean 깃 (kis).
