From Proto-Karen *ʔbwaᴬ ~ ʔ(b)wa (“white”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b/s-wa (“white; yellow; bright”). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ဗွာ, S'gaw Karen ဝါ (wa), Western Pwo ဘွၩ.
