Etymology
Compound of 鳴門 (naruto, “a noisy strait or narrows where the rushing of the tides causes noisy whirlpools”) + 巻き (maki, “winding; spiral”), for the way the spiral pattern in the kamaboko resembles a whirlpool.[1][2]

鳴門巻き (hiragana なるとまき, rōmaji narutomaki)
- A type of 蒲鉾 (kamaboko, “fishcake”) that is white on the outside with a pink spiral pattern on the inside. Prepared in loaves or rolls, then sliced and added to dishes as a garnish.
