Etymology

From Middle English bischopdom, from Old English bisċopdōm, bisċeopdōm, bisċepdōm (“the province of a bishop; a bishopric”), equivalent to bishop +‎ -dom. Cognate with Dutch bisdom (“bishopdom”), German Bistum (“bishopdom”), Danish bispedømme (“bishopdom”), Swedish biskopsdöme (“bishopdom”), Icelandic biskupsdæmur, biskupsdæmi (“bishopdom”).
