Etymology

From Middle Chinese 靈長 (MC leŋ ʈɨɐŋ^X, literally “god, deity + master, chief”). Ultimately sourced from the 書経 (Shokyō, “Book of Documents”), one version of which is dated to the late Qin dynasty.
