- 講演会 differs from 講演 in that it refers to the congregation of people for the giving and hearing of a lecture, rather than the lecture or address itself. Also, it can be useful to use the longer word when talking, because it avoids confusion with the many homonyms of the shorter word (most notably including 公園 (kōen, “park”), which is very common, and 公演 (kōen, “public performance”) which is somewhat similar in meaning).
