Etymology
From Old Japanese.
The 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of pillow word 茜さす (akane sasu),[1] equivalent to 茜 (akane, “madder (dye) → red”) + 差し (sashi, “shining, tinging”).
