Etymology
Unger (1986) reconstructs Old Chinese pronunciation as *pl(j)aŋʔ and considers this item part of a word family under 陽 (OC *laŋ) and related to Thai [script needed] (plaŋ, “bright”); alternatively, Schuessler (2007) minimally reconstructs *br(j)aŋʔ and includes 炳 in an Austroasiatic word family under 亮 (OC *raŋs). See there for more.
