Etymology

Literally the “moon during the sixteenth night of the lunar calendar → moon at dawn”.

Noun

有明の月 (hiragana ありあけのつき, rōmaji ariake no tsuki)

1. the moon still in the sky at the hours around dawn or sunrise
   • 905–914, Kokin Wakashū (book 6, poem 332, also Hyakunin Isshu, poem 31)

     あさぼらけありあけの月 (つき)と見 (み)るまでに吉 (よし)野 (の)の里 (さと)に降 (ふ)れる白雪 (しらゆき)

     asaborake ariake no tsuki to miru made ni Yoshino-no-sato ni fureru shirayuki

     In the dawn glow the white snow fallen in Yoshino Village almost seems the daybreak moon.[1]

   Synonym: 有明月 (ariake-zuki)
