Possibly an Austronesian loan, since this kind of axe has been discovered in archaeological sites in areas where Austronesian languages were once spoken; compare Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *wasay (axe) (Mahdi, 1994; Schuessler, 2007). Also compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *wac (knife; sword), Old Mon rwas (weapon) (Schuessler, 2007).
