From Middle Chinese 復讎 (bjuwk dzyuw, literally “return + rivalry”). Compare Mandarin 復仇 (fùchóu), Cantonese 復仇 (fuk⁶ sau⁴), Min Nan 復仇 (ho̍k-siû), Korean 복수 (boksu), Vietnamese phục thù.
