Etymology
大和 (“Yamato nation; Japan”) + 仮名. So called because hiragana and katakana were Japanese inventions, as opposed to 真名 (mana, “non-phonetic Chinese characters”) and 真仮名 (magana, “phonetic Chinese characters”).
