Etymology
Compound of 半 (han-, “semi-”) + 母音 (boin, “vowel”).[1][2][3]
First cited to a text from 1912 with the now-obsolete reading of hanboon.[4] The reading appears to have shifted from hanboon to hanboin by 1922.[1]

- 母音と云ふものはアイウエオの五字、半母音と云ふものはワヰウヱヲの五字を云ふのであります。
- Boin to ifu mono wa aiueo no goji, hanboin to ifu mono wa wawiuweo no goji o ifu no de arimasu.
- ‘Vowels’ are the five letters a, i, u, e and o. ‘Semivowels’ are the five letters wa, wi, u, we and wo.
