Etymology

From an otherwise unattested Old Korean word, probably *kapɨl, which later developed to Seoul Korean 가오리 (gaori), Gyeongsang dialect 가부리 (gaburi).

The second character is a typical example of 훈가자(訓假字) (hun'gaja), using the Chinese character for "fire" to represent the syllable *pɨl because the ancient Korean word for "fire" was *pɨl (> Middle Korean 블 (pul)).
