simp. and trad. (伊犁) | 伊 | 犁 |
Etymology
Borrowed from Manchu ᡳᠯᡳ (ili), from Written Oirat ᡅᠯᡅ (ili).
Further etymology is not clear. In the Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk, compiled in the 11th century, the toponym is recorded as اِلا and glossed as the name of a river. 伊麗 (MC ʔiɪ liᴇ|leiH) and 伊列 (MC ʔiɪ liᴇt̚), older Chinese translations of the name of the river, are attested in the Tongdian [801 CE] and the Old Book of Tang [945 CE].
