1. A space or word break, indicating where one word ends and where the next begins.

Usage notes

• Used to replace spaces in foreign words, such as writing foreign names (ジョージ・W・ブッシュ (“George W. Bush”)) and compound terms, or in children’s books. It is used in a way similar to the Chinese ·. Spaces are, however, ignored in commonly used words, for example ラブレター (rabu retā, “love letter”).
• Use to separate list items, similarly to the word and, ampersands, commas, semicolons or forward slashes. E.g.: スマートフォン・タブレット (“smartphones and tablets”); トリニダード・トバゴ (“Trinidad and Tobago”); 水みず・水みず族ぞく・星レベル3・攻こう500・守しゅ500 (“WATER / Aqua-Type / Level 3 / ATK 500 / DEF 500”).
